With frontispiece portrait engraving. Contains the scarce original map of ca. 1870, 60 x 90 cm foldout, 'Map of the Province of Canada from Lake Superior to the Gulf of St. Lawrence Corrected from Information Obtained by the Geological Survey Under the Direction of Sir W. E. Logan and Prepared for the Canada Directory Thos. C. Keefer C. E. Montreal. Robert Barlow Draughtsman. Scale 25 Miles to one Inch. Original blind embossed purple cloth over board, gilt spine title. Important document on history of commerce and transportation in Upper Canada. Merritt was instrumental in the planning and building of the Welland Canal.
Dedication on ffly, some crossed-out provenance on paste-down, name in corner of title page. Engraving and title page moderate foxing; binding faded and worn but solid and o/w very good. The map, except for a few small repairs with transparent paper in folds, is in very good condition.
