[Robert Carrall]
[Woodstock]
"The grandson of a British American loyalist who helped settle Woodstock, Ontario, Robert Carrall studied medicine at McGill University, served in the American Civil War as a medical doctor, and set up a practice in Barkerville, British Columbia during the Cariboo goldrush. He helped this province join Confederation and became a respected senator. Senator Carrall returned to Woodstock before his death in 1879. A good friend of Sir John A. Macdonald, R. C. championed the creation of Dominion Day as a national holiday and the song The New Dominion as our national anthem. Music and lyrics are included, along with archival photographs and rare copies of Carrall's correspondence with the office of the Surgeon General during the Civil War."
