[Gothic Novel]
Originally published in 1777 as 'The Champion of Virtue', this is 'revised and corrected' (C. R's Dedication to Ms. Bridgen, daughter of Richardson). From her Preface: This Story is the literary Offspring of the Castle of Otranto, written upon the same plan, with a design to unite the most attractive and interesting circumstances of the ancient Romance and modern Novel... Full original calf with gilt border, gilt title and decoration on spine. Marbleized hand made end papers. Frontispiece- and an additional copper engraving.
Some wear at edges, some loss at top of spine, with rubbing and dulled gilt. The book itself seems almost unread, judging by the perfect alignment of signatures and edges and tightness of binding.
